When Anna was ten years old, her favorite book was Homer’s Odyssey.

 

The Odyssey was, along with Beowulf, one of the first books she read that showed her the magic of storytelling. Reading the Odyssey showed her that a page can be as real as a movie. Of course, she has always loved to read anything and everything (to the point where her mom had to take “reading time” out of her schedule as a kid because she would always run about two hours over). But it took falling into the world of the Odyssey to show her why she loved to read. She was fascinated by the portrayals of good and evil, the moral dilemmas Odysseus faced, and the world in which he lived. Above all, she fell in love with its tangibility within her imagination. She felt like she was there, trekking beside Odysseus as he struggled towards his goals. She felt the pent-up years of his outrage within herself as he returned home. And she held her breath as he released his bowstring of justice.

 

Today Anna is a Teaching Assistant at NC State University while she pursues her M.A. in English with a focus on Medieval literature. She also teaches speech and debate at a classical Christian high school. Anna holds a B.A. summa cum laude/with highest honors in literature from Patrick Henry College. In her free time, she enjoys serving at her church and participating in medieval wartime reenactments.
