Great Chance for $$$
This is one of those speech contests that, depending on your location, may not have a lot of students entering, so the opportunity for award money can be outstanding. One of our FoxbridgePrep coaches won $5,000 through this program! The year she entered, there were only about 10 students in NC competing for over $1,000 in prize money.
Enriching Experience
More than just the money, though, the SAR competition is a wonderful learning experience. It's run by an inspiring group of men who love their country and want to encourage patriotism and a knowledge of history in the younger generation. Those who win at the state level receive an expense-paid trip to the national competition (this year, in Orlando!). SAR works hard to make the national event fun for the students coming; not only do you get to see a new area of the country, you also make some new friends.
January Deadline
Application dates vary by club, but most are coming up soon - in NC, registration is due by the end of January. Google to find your state's SAR organization and ask how to apply. The NC form is attached here. If your state doesn't have a SAR club, you can still participate in the competition as an "at large" candidate - contact Mr. Jack Bredenfoerder, the national SAR Rumbaugh Chairman, at jack.b@fuse.net .
Typically the first step in participating is filling out a registration form. The form may ask questions about your activities and your parents - those aren't taken into consideration in the contest; they are just there so that if you win, the SAR hosts can introduce you to the club and tell them something about who you are.
